Ok here we go!MM
So today's featured is a band that wrote a concept album following the plot of Moby-Dick the novel written by Herman Nelville in 1851. Now this novel tells the story of fishmen who struggle against the legendary white beast during one of their many fishing expeditions. Many characters are presented as the story unfolds... and for some reason many of them have biblical names. What's the deal with that... now I have to be honest I haven't fully read the novel, and the only Moby-Dick I was familiar with, before I started reading it, was the song where Bonzo (John Bonham from Led Zeppelin) does what he knows best, but I have to say that the story looks pretty interesting. Through the main character's journey, the concepts of class and social status, good and evil, and the existence of gods are all examined as Ishmael speculates upon his personal beliefs and his place in the universe. It's a twisting tale of obsesion, revenge, comedy and introspective streams of consciousness.
As I see it the white beast represents big things you have to overcome throughout your life to acomplish a goal, and if that is accurate, I myself, may be facing the nastiest beast of them all... or at least that's what I think. You may be facing a big beast as well... so good luck with that and hopefully you will triumph or at least come out alive with a more informed opinion and a different perspective... just like Ishmael did.
So check this out, the song Iron Tusk is the moment when the Pequod (the ship) faces Moby Dick. They battle for three days after which the beast charges against the ship sinking it and drowning everyone, except for Ishmael.
Here are the lyrics... Kill that beast.
Oh by the way, the video has nothing to do with the story so don't even bother trying to link them, or if you find there's an obvious link then please let me know...I'll apreciate it. Also you may want to check out Seabeast... that video has a more direct aproach to the Moby Dick story, although it's a little crazy. Oh and for a bio, you may want to click here.
See you next Metal Monday.
Please post comments or suggestions. Rock hard!
