The Function of Music
Making music requires the ability of synchronizing various elements (instruments) in a harmonious manner to create imaginary landscapes that transport the listener. Where is the listener transported to? Wherever they want, that's the beauty of it; as they say with regard to paintings, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Music listeners associate geographical locations and recall fellings when listening to their favorite songs. Music remindes you of people, smells, flavors and even evoke colors associated with chord progressions.
Lyrics in music express in a more tangible way, what the author felt as he composed the piece. It's the product of a creative process and statement on it's own. However, as in poetry and literature, many interpretations can be given to the same verse. The educational, ethical and cultural backgrounds of each person can be viewed as interweaving elements of a time and context sensitive cloth that filters all the information within a song, creating a reaction as unique as the listener is.
Reactions come in all colors and flavors, some songs are thought to be danceable, as others are only listened to. Some songs are identified as party songs as others are considered sacred. The important lesson is that the uniqueness of the song's understanding is what unites two listeners and lets them share their liking of the piece because ultimately, in some way or the other, it's their own. It moves the fibers of their existance.
Music should be listened to with a great deal of honesty and responsibility towards who you are. Love what you like and respect what you don't, for it may represent the whole expression of someone else's existance.
