Indie Tuesday - M.I.A. - Kala - Paper Planes

Ok here we go!

IT

So I'm a little late this week for the Indie Tuesday review, I apologize and if it happens again, you might as well flush yourself down the toilet and comeback the next day a'aight!!! Just kidding :P

This week I want to feature a hip-hop for hipsters act. I don't know why I just find it very intresting. M.I.A's singer, and don't confuse it with MIA. M.I.A's singer is a London, born, nice looking lady (not in the video I feature though, just an opinion from your humble server) with Sri Lankan roots. She was named Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam blablablabla and during her early years, her family, living at London, moved to their native Sri Lanka. Once there her father became affiliated and increasingly involved in political militant activities in the civil war.

Now the ongoing civil war in the island-nation of Sri Lanka is being fought between the official government (negotiator of independence from the UK) and separatist political party and militant supporters who demand, among others, the northern and eastern territories of the island, and independent government. The separatist party's name is: Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, and they are considered as terrorists by more than 32 countries. Their methods are not very politically correct so to speak. They have signed cease fire treaties and continuosly ignored them and since the renewal of their military thrust in Nov. 05, around 200.000 people have been displaced within the country and some other 4000 have been killed. Deliberately and with no discrimination, civilians have been hurt or killed during aerial bombardment, shelling and claymore mine attacks in violation of International Humanitarian Law. As a result the Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have sent a joint letter to the UN Human Rights Council, asking to put an end to the abuse that the people are enduring.

As a result, Maya migrated to India and then the UK. Her music shows strong influence from her sri lankan roots, indian acquired musical airs and the underground London hip hop, funk and disco movements. The lyrics... she sells sandwiches, takes your money and BANG!!!! :(

I know this song doesn't show some of her influence from Sri Lankan and Indian music so check out this song. It's called Jimmy. It's a really cool video.
See you nexxxt Indie Tuesday.

Please post comments or suggestions. Rock hard!
