WTF Friday - Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punks, Underworld World Strike - 60 Revolutions

Ok here we go!

WTFF

Today, being it the first wtf friday, I wanted to feature a band that has an attitude that just shouts: SHOVE IT!!!! really loud, and that basically is just not mainstream at all. So as I looked back and listened to some bands that I remember having a really strong first impression on, I stumbled with Gogol Bordello. Now I don't know if you've ever heard of this band, and if you have I'm preety shure you know what I mean.

Now Gogol Bordello is a band that combines elements of punk, gypsy music (although they are not the only ones) and according to Eugene Hütz (band's lead singer) Brechtian cabaret... hmmm what ever that is. Gogol Bordelo's lyrics tells stories about the ensuing development of immigrant's culture in New York. Why New York, you ask? Apart from being where the band resides, NY's 2000 census showed that 36% of the city's population was foreign born. The next question would be... Why treat immigration subjects... Well let's just say that he has been an immigrant since he was evacuated from west Ukraine as a security measure after the Chernobil incident. He lived in Hungary, Poland, Austria and Italy before moving to United States, so he knows exactly what it feels like to be an outsider.

So they started playing gypsy music at Russian weddings, while Eugene became a local celebrity as a DJ at a downtown NY club, playing Ukrainian, Gypsy, raï and flamenco music for pretty bizarre crowds. The band, as NY has become a melting pot of musical styles, the have an american drumer, israeli guitarist and saxophonist and a russian accordionist and it all seems to work perfectly, or not exactly, maybe not, but who cares about perfection right! The music is great when it makes you feel like dancing, opa :P

Oh and the band has also made appereances on movies such as Everything Is Illuminated (starring Elijah Wood and Eugene Hütz), which has helped to bring their music to much broader audiences. They actually played a song called Start Wearing Purple in the movie. This is a new one so check out the trailer.

So here's their way of saying: Possers!

Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punks, Underworld World Strike - 60 Revolutions (lyrics)

The lyrics are not as acurate as they should be but they were playing live and this guy doesn't even know spanish (I think) so... you get the idea.

All right I hope you liked it, and if you didn't, that's fine. If you want to write a review and lift this heavy burden of my back please let me know. Have a nice weekend, que la pasen bomba! Salud.
See you nexxxt WTF Friday.
Please post comments or suggestions. Rock hard!
